HYDROPHOBIC SURFACE- TREATED BARIUM SULFATE AND POLYMER COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING THE SAME

A process for the preparation of hydrophobic surface-treated barium sulfate, lithopone, calcium sulfate, aluminium hydroxide, ultramarine pigment or chrome pigment comprising the steps of coating barium sulfate, lithopone, calcium sulfate, aluminium hydroxide, ultramarine pigment or chrome pigment having particle size in the range of 0.04 to 10 µ with the aqueous dispersion of organosilicon compounds by spray coating or/and mixing; and washing, drying and micronizing said barium sulfate, lithopone, calcium sulfate, aluminium hydroxide, ultramarine pigment or chrome pigment and said dispersion to form hydrophobic surface treated barium sulfate, lithopone, calcium sulfate, aluminium hydroxide, ultramarine pigment or chrome pigment by steam micronizer or air micronizer at 150 to 300ºC under 5 to 33 bar pressure. The hydrophobic surface-treated barium sulfate, lithopone, calcium sulfate, aluminium hydroxide, ultramarine pigment or chrome pigment is compounded with polymer to improve process-ability in compounding and to improve performance properties such as lacing resistance and yellowing / discolouration resistance in a polymeric matrix.
