The invention relates to a method for comparing the performances and selecting the heat transfer surfaces in compact heat exchangers. The claimed method permits the identification of the optimal pair of heat transfer surfaces from the minimal entropy generation point of view and consists of a stage of sizing the heat exchanger on the basis of some imposed parameters, such as: thermal load, flow rates of heating media, the circulation diagram and the nature of fluids and a stage of testing the heat transfer surfaces in which the heat transfer surface on the side of one of the two heating media is replaced in the heat exchanger sized in the precedent stage, while maintaining the other parameters determined in the previous stage, which allows the comparison between surface types.
