The invention relates to a knitted fabric and to a process for making the same for carrying out certain garments. According to the invention, the knitted fabric is a layered fabric with loop binding and racking pattern, containing loops not converted into stitches in inclined position, crossing with rib-type tuck stitches (a) from the opposite side, as a consequence of the needle bar displacement and knitting of flat-type stitches (b). The process claimed by the invention consists in four knitting stages in which the courses (I and II)are carried out while repeating the series of stitches (a and b), between which there is inserted a stage of relative displacement of the needle bar of the same amplitude, to the opposite direction, a knitted fabric with high transverse extensibility being obtained thereby.
