The invention relates to a process for preparing unsaturated polyesters, with applications in motor vehicle components manufacturing. According to the invention, the process comprises the reaction of catalyzed depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate PET wastes in a reactor with combined microwave/conduction heating, at normal pressure and moderate temperature of 220...230°C, in the presence of diethylene glycol DEG as a solvolysis agent, in a PET : DEG mass ratio of 2...0.2, after which the resulting polyester polyols are used as such in the reaction of polycondensation with maleic anhydride, to result in unsaturated polyesters with various degrees of unsaturation.
