Disclosed is a process for the continuous production of biofuel by hydrothermal carbonization of wet biomass, comprising the steps of: mixing wet biomass with waste water; hydrothermal carbonization at temperatures from 170 ° C to 230 ° C, pressures from 792 to 2800 kPa, for 10 minutes to 2 hours, and pH 2 to 7; filtering out the resulting biofuel from the reaction mixture, whereby the mechanical pre-treatment of the biomass with the water can be preceded. The water used in the process is municipal waste water or industrial waste water, and the biomass is selected from the group consisting of agricultural and industrial waste, municipal sludge, waste streams from the food industry.
