A method for purifying waste water by an activation process with increased nitrogen and phosphorus removal comprising processes running in the anaerobic zone, anoxic zone, oxic zone, and settling zone of the biological reactor with controlling the aeration, recirculation and mixing of the activating mixture by intermittent operation, during which the short-term aeration periods and short-term recirculation periods are alternating and one short-term aeration period and one short-cycle recirculation are forming one cycle. An apparatus for sewage purification by active process with an increased nitrogen and phosphorus removal process comprising a control unit equipped with at least one daily time mode with a fixed length of short-term aeration periods and short term periods of recirculation or short-term periods of peace within one cycle or equipped with at least one algorithm for conversion of length of short-term aeration periods, short-term periods of recirculation, or short-term periods of peace depending on measured quantities using on-line metering devices within one cycle.
