Use of compounds of the general formula III: Formula ** ** as catalysts for the preparation of α-hydroxyketones by acyloin addition, R1 and R2 being the same or different and are C6-C10-aryl, heteroaryl, C1- C10-alkyl branched or unbranched, which is optionally substituted, optionally one or polysubstituted by C1-C4-alkyl or heteroalkyl, C3-C6-cycloalkyl or C6-C10-aryl mono- or polysubstituted by C1-C4- alkyl, and where R3 and R4 the same or different, and denote hydrogen, C1-C6-alkyl, optionally branched C3-C6-cycloalkyl, C6-C10-aryl or heteroaryl.
