A method for determining the number of hematopoietic precursor cells in a sample comprising: culturing hematopoietic cells obtained from a sample of tissue or fluid containing hematopoietic cells in a medium that supports the growth of colonies of hematopoietic precursor cells; staining the colonies in a single step with MTT (3- [4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl] -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) unwashed; take pictures of the colonies in the absence of a microscope; and counting precursor cells of erythroid colonies (forming unit erythroid colony), multi (forming unit multiline colony), and granulocyte-macrophage (forming unit granulocyte-macrophage colony), and combinations thereof, in the sample, wherein determining the number of hematopoietic progenitor cells is carried out with a system image detection and quantification comprising: a high resolution camera; a suitable light alignments; a flashlamp broad spectrum; and positive sample identification.
