A nucleic acid encoding the amino acid sequence of acetolactate synthase (AHAS) functional rice, wherein: the encoded AHAS exhibits a resistance to at least one imidazolinone herbicide and at least one sulfonylurea herbicide that normally interfere with AHAS rice wildtype; encoded AHAS has a serine substitution at asparagine at amino acid position 627 of SEQ ID NO: 17; and the encoded AHAS is identical to wild type AHAS comprising the amino acid sequence as shown by SEQ ID NO: 17, except for the substitution of serine to asparagine that is present in said encoded AHAS.
