A method for puckering a portion of tubular film (3) onto at least two gathering fingers (1) of a packaging machine, in which the tubular film portion (3) expands at least in a partial region when it is being gathered on the gathering fingers (1), characterized in that the tubular film portion (3) expands only in the region between a contact means (4) of the respective gathering finger (1) and a gathering roller (6) of a unit gather actuator when the contact means (4) are moved to an operative connection position with the gather roller (6) that confines the tubular film portion (3).
