A compression ignition combustion process for a rotary engine (100) having: I. a casing (102), II. a rotor (104): A. rotating within the housing (102), B. having a circumference with two or more rotor faces (106) thereon, wherein a chamber (108) is defined between each rotor face (106) and housing (102) during rotation (104) of the rotor; in which the procedure includes the steps of: a. providing a first fuel charge to one of the chambers (108) at a first stage during the time between: (1) the opening of an intake port (114) to the chamber (108), and (2) within 90 degrees of rotation of the rotor after the intake port (114) closes to the chamber (108); and wherein the first fuel charge has a first reactivity; b. subsequently providing a second charge of fuel to chamber (108); (1), while chamber (108) contains the first fuel charge, and (2) during the time between: (a) closing of the intake port (114) to chamber (108), and (b) within 90 degrees of rotor rotation before chamber 108 has a minimum size, in which the second fuel charge has a second reactivity different from the first reactivity, in which the second fuel charge is supplied to the chamber (108) to obtain a stratified distribution of fuel reactivity within chamber (108), with regions of higher fuel reactivity separated from regions of lower fuel reactivity, at the start of ignition.
