A gear set for a transmission for use in limited space and capable oftransmitting relatively large amounts of power with a small diameter of thegear sets,comprising a series of helical gear elements having stub shafts extendinglaterally fromeither side thereof, each of the stub shafts having teeth formed at the remoteendsthereof and a central axial bore extending through each gear element and acoupleradapted to engage the teeth on adjacent gear elements join gear elements indrivingcontact. The gear set having a relatively large effective diameter, and atension railextending through the axial bore in the gear elements with retainers at eitherend of thetension rail so as to effectively permit limited axial movement along thetension rail whilepreventing inadvertent disengagement.
