Methods and a system for a vehicle control system using a reference timeprofile including an upper control boundand a lower control bound are provided. The system includes an input deviceconfigured to receive a required time of arrival at awaypoint and a processor communicatively coupled to said input device whereinthe processor is programmed to generate a referencetime profile using a first speed profile up to an intermediate control pointand a second speed profile between the intermediatecontrol point and an RTA waypoint. The system also includes an output devicecommunicatively coupled to the processorwherein the output device is configured to transmit a speed control signalbased on the reference time profile to a vehicle speedcontrol system.
