A method and system for relieving forging inducedresidual stresses in a rotor forging (12) balances a pre- spinmachine (10) with the forging mounted thereon at a first rotationalspeed and then pre -spins the forging with it mounted on themachine at a substantially greater second rotational speed. A oneper rev sensor (60) is used for determining a weight placement angleand a vibration sensor (58) is used for determining an amountof weight to add to a spinning assembly including the forging duringthe balancing. The rotational inertia of the spinningassembly may be checked during a spin up period by determininga rate of rotational acceleration vs. torque applied to the spinningassembly and used to stop the pre-spinning if it is to great.
