Ferulate esterase producing bacterial strain Lactobacillus crispatus LI2127 or functional mutants thereof and methods of using ferulate esterase producing bacterial strain Lactobacillus crispatus LI2127 as forage additive is disclosed. Compositions comprising Lactobacillus crispatus LI2127 alone or in combination with other strains for use as a silage inoculant, and methods for treating pre- ensiled plant material with Lactobacillus crispatus LI2127 to enhance digestability of the silage are disclosed.
