An apparatus and method including a control panel of an automation system thatprotects a secured geographic area actively scanning each of a plurality ofradiofrequency channels of a predetermined radio frequency spectrum for otheraccesspoints operating under an IEEE802.15.4 format, the control panel identifyingat least twoof the plurality of channels with a lowest relative number of the other accesspointsoperating under the IEEE802.15.4 format, the control panel performing anenergy scanon each of the identified at least two channels, the control panel selectingone of the atleast two channels with a lowest relative energy and the control panel settingup awireless connection with each of a plurality of wireless sensors within thesecured areaon the selected channel under the IEEE802.15.4 format.
