The invention relates to the field of detecting nitrogen-containing explosive substances with the aid of neutron radiation analysis. For this purpose, an object under inspection is irradiated with thermal neutrons, the energy spectrum of the recorded gamma rays is determined, and the number of gamma quanta in the region of 10.8 MeV is calculated. Prior to inspection, the background number of gamma quanta recorded during irradiation of a chamber, a reference iron-containing material with a known iron mass content, and a reference chrome-containing material with a known chrome mass content are determined, and these are taken into account when deciding whether an explosive substance is present in the object under inspection. The technical result is a decrease in the likelihood of a false alarm in the event that materials containing iron and chrome are present in the object under inspection.
