The invention relates to a method for controlling a power flow in a power network (1) of a railway system, and to a power network (1). In the method according to the invention a power consumption and/or power output of at least one participant (2) in the power network (1) is controlled at least temporarily as a function of at least one power tolerance (7) of at least one guiding means (3) of the power network (1) which is representative of a permissible deviation from a normal power consumption and/or energy output of the at least one participant (2). In order to reduce the computing power and the complexity of the power network, according to the invention the power tolerance (7) of the at least one participant (2) to the guiding means (3) is transmitted.
