The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for automatically locking and unlocking a screen during a chat. The method comprises the following steps: determining a rolling direction of a current chat message in a chat window; and if the rolling direction of the current chat message in the chat window is opposite to a rolling direction of a chat message during loading of a new message, setting a current chat interface as a screen locked state, the screen locked state referring to that: when the new message emerges, the chat window does not automatically roll to the position of the new message. In addition, the present invention also provides an apparatus for implementing the method for automatically locking and unlocking a screen during a chat, and a mobile client and a computer client using the apparatus. Compared with the prior art, the present invention can predict screen locking and unlocking intentions of a player by determining a rolling situation of a chat window, and assist the player in screen locking or unlocking before the player executes a manual operation, thereby greatly improving the user experience of a chat.
