An interactive system and the accompanying method for creating music with a digital musical instrument are provided. The musical instrument includes a music element database that comprises tonality, tempo, beat, timbre, texture, chord, and pitch, a user interface, a feedback device, and a processor. As a player is playing the musical instrument, the processor collects information regarding the musical elements that the player has selected, executes one or more recommendation heuristics, and instructs the feedback device to present the recommendations to the player.
