The invention relates to a method for maintaining the transmission of data in an optical free beam channel in the event of degraded transmission properties of the free beam channel, having the following steps: providing terminals with a symmetrical terminal geometry in which a transmission beam is transmitted and a received beam is received via the same aperture along a common beam axis; ascertaining the reception power in each terminal on the reception side; and when transmitting data in the event of a reduction of the ascertained reception power and/or in the event that at least one specifiable threshold is undershot, taking measures in each terminal on the transmission side for maintaining a secure data transmission and/or a transmission of data with the goal of correcting the received data on the reception side.
