Embodiments of the invention disclose a resident cell switching method for a communication terminal, an apparatus and a communication terminal, the method comprising: upon detecting that a speed of the communication terminal is less than a first threshold, obtaining wireless signal strength values corresponding to wireless signals received by the communication terminal when the terminal resides in a different communication cell; determining cell identifiers of at least two communication cells according to the wireless signal strength values; obtaining call current values for when the communication terminal resides in communication cells corresponding to each of the cell identifiers; determining a cell identifier corresponding to the smallest call current value of the call current values to be a target communication cell identifier, and switching the resident cell of the communication terminal to the communication cell corresponding to the target communication cell identifier. The technical solution provided by the embodiments of the invention facilitates reducing power consumption of a terminal and extending the battery life of the terminal, and avoids the terminal heating up during calling.
