Embodiments relate generally to systems and methods for determining when a headset is worn, and activating or deactivating the power for one or more elements of the headset. A headset may comprise two earmuffs comprising active noise cancellation elements; a headband; a strain gauge attached to the headband operable to detect flexing of the headband; at least one microphone located on the interior of an earmuff; a control unit operable to power one or more of the elements of the headset, wherein the control unit receives information from the strain gauge and the microphones to indicate whether the headset is worn by a user or not, wherein the control unit activates the power for the headset when the headset is worn by a user, and wherein the control unit deactivates the power for the headset when the headset is not worn by a user.
