Disclosed is a method for automatically adjusting online playing-based multimedia data traffic, which relates to the technical field of multimedia online playing. In this method, a broadband occupation proportion and a selected playing standard are determined; and only when the broadband occupation proportion is higher than a pre-set first broadband threshold value and the selected playing standard is higher than a pre-set playing standard, is the playing standard adjusted to the pre-set playing standard, and a data packet is sent according to the adjusted playing standard; otherwise, the data packet is sent according to the selected playing standard. Also disclosed is a device for automatically adjusting online playing-based multimedia data traffic. The method and device for automatically adjusting online playing-based multimedia data traffic enable a higher playing standard to be reduced to a pre-set playing standard when a server is in a high load, so that the data processing and transmitting efficiency of the server is improved, and a terminal user is enabled to obtain the better online video playing experience.
