[Problem] Provided are: a method for producing a nitrogen-containing aromatic amide, in which method a monomer unit obtained under mild reaction conditions can be used, and which is performed by the catalytic formation of amide linkages; and a method for producing a pyrrole-imidazole polyamide. [Solution] [1] A method for producing a nitrogen-containing aromatic amide, the method comprising a step for reacting compound 1 represented by general formula (1) with compound 2 represented by general formula (2) in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and a base to obtain compound 3 represented by general formula (3), [2] a method for producing a pyrrole-imidazole polyamide using compound 3 obtained by the method described in [1], and [3] a compound represented by general formula (2aa), general formula (2ab), general formula (2ac), or general formula (2ad).
