Disclosed is a chat background display apparatus based on instant-messaging software; the device terminals of two parties to a chat are both equipped with instant-messaging software, and the apparatus comprises: a determining unit, used when a current user and an opposite user use instant-messaging software on their respective terminal devices to engage in real-time chat, for determining, according to a current user's operation, to set a chat background, consult details, switch, and synchronize; a display unit, used when the current user and the opposite user use instant-messaging software to engage in real-time chat, for displaying, according to the current user's operation, the set or switched chat background and synchronously displaying same in the chat window of the two parties to the chat, and displaying, in a sub-window of the chat window of the two parties to the chat, the details of the chat background. The chat background display apparatus based on instant messaging software implemented by the present invention has the following benefits: it allows the chat background to be effectively involved in the chat, simplifies the user operation process, and enhances user experience.
