The present invention can be used to reduce the operating temperature of a photovoltaic panel (PV) in order to increase the energy generated by the panel by irrigating the upper surface of same. The system of the present invention can irrigate the green roof when the PV panel is installed on same. The present invention comprises three sub-systems: i) a fluid supply sub-system for irrigating the PV panel; ii) a monitoring and control sub-system; and iii) a fluid supply sub-system for irrigating the green roof. The present invention includes a method for the intelligent irrigation of a PV panel, with the aim of making efficient use of the irrigation fluid and achieving the maximum energy gain by integrating irrigation into the photovoltaic system. The method can be used to determine when the irrigation of the PV panel should be started, for what length of time the panel should be irrigated and which irrigation source should be used (supply network or storage tank). The present invention also includes a method for the intelligent irrigation of the green roof. The operation of the fluid supply sub-system for irrigating the green roof is determined by the instructions for this method and by the moisture content of the substrate, which is monitored by a moisture content sensor, ensuring efficient use of the fluid based on two operating levels of the green roof substrate, the critical moisture content and the acceptable moisture content.
