The present invention relates to an apparatus for preventing drowsiness of a driver using a road sign and a control method thereof. The apparatus for preventing drowsiness of a driver using a road sign comprises: an illumination unit positioned in front of a road sign to illuminate the road sign; a first sensor to sense surrounding brightness of the road sign; a second sensor which is disposed on the illumination unit and senses a vehicle driving on the front of a road on which the road sign is installed; and a control unit to turn on the illumination unit if the surrounding brightness sensed by the first sensor is lower than or equal to a reference value, and repeatedly turn on and off illumination of the illumination unit according to a sensed signal of the second sensor. According to the present invention, a driver is allowed to accurately see a road sign while driving, and drowsiness while driving is prevented.
