Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for estimating an optical signal-to-noise ratio for a nonlinear optical transmission system, capable of estimating the degree of signal distortion due to nonlinearity of an optical fiber. The most significant feature of the present invention is to compensate for the influence of optical fiber nonlinearity in estimating an optical signal-to-noise ratio of a received signal in a coherent-based long-distance optical transmission system operating in the presence of nonlinearity. According to the present invention, not only can the optical signal-to-noise ratio be accurately monitored even in the presence of optical fiber non-linearity, but also information on the number, the section length, optical power per channel, and the optical signal-to-noise ratio of wavelength division multiplexed signals are required. It is possible to easily apply the present invention to a modern optical transmission network, in which the environment of the system is changed by frequent network reconfiguration, without prior knowledge of the system environment.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2016
