An OFDM communication system performs time domain channel estimation in response to a received signal before the symbol is processed by a fast Fourier transform. The communication system generates a virtual pilot from the actual pilot to improve the stability and quality of the channel estimation. The system generates a reference signal from the real and virtual pilots, correlates the resulting reference signal with the received symbol in response to the received symbol to generate an initial channel impulse response (CIR), and determines a statistic for the channel . In some circumstances, the resulting reference signal is correlated with the modified symbol, the real and imaginary pilot positions are emphasized, and the data position is weakened. The time domain channel estimation improves iteratively for the initial CIR. The system determines the channel estimate for the data only symbol through averaging such as interpolation.
