The temperature of a component in a portable computing device (PCD) is monitored with parameters associated with temperature. The parameters associated with temperature may be operating frequency, transmit power or data flow rate. It is determined whether the temperature has exceeded a threshold value. If the temperature exceeds the threshold value, the temperature is compared with the temperature set value, and then the first error value is calculated based on the comparison. Next, a first optimal value of the parameter is determined based on the first error value. If the temperature is below the threshold value, the current value of the parameter is compared to the desired threshold for the parameter, and the second error value is calculated based on the comparison. A second optimal value for the parameter may be determined based on the second error value.
