The present invention relates to a method, apparatus and computer program product for detecting undesired transient flicker (flicker) in an image frame sequence. In one embodiment, the framed luminance average is compared to a reference level, and the crossover frequency is compared to an expected variation frequency, such as the frequency associated with the illumination frequency through aliasing. The crossover count can be refined by introducing a latent zone around the reference level. A calibration method, apparatus, and computer program product using the cumulative distribution function are also provided, when undesired temporal variations are reliably detected. The visual impairment of the flicker-induced saturation of a pixel is alleviated by brightening the non-saturated pixel or by replacing the saturated pixel with a randomly sampled value according to the reference cumulative distribution function. The present invention provides an embodiment suitable for real-time processing of streamed video sequences.;
