Methods, systems, and devices for increased wireless communication system capacity through hierarchical modulation of multiple transmission layers during certain transmission subframes in a wireless communication system are described. Various deployment scenarios may be supported that may provide modulated communications for both the base modulation layer as well as the enhancement modulation layer superimposed on its base modulation layer. Reference signals may be provided for channel estimation for both the primary modulation layer and the enhancement modulation layer.
