An OLT for efficiently using a plurality of wavelength channels and a registration method performed by an ONU can be provided. The OLT and the ONU can exchange displayed messages where wavelength output characteristics are displayed with each other. The ONU may include one among a fixed wavelength optical transceiver using only one wavelength, a variable wavelength optical transceiver for selecting and using one wavelength from a plurality of wavelengths, and a multi-wavelength optical transceiver for using at least one of the plurality of wavelengths at the same time. The OLT can identify the optical transceiver included in the ONU and determine a wavelength to be used by the ONU according to the characteristics of the identified optical transceiver.
