The present invention relates to a method for inhibiting xanthine oxidase and lowering uric acid levels using a beta-carboline alkaloid compound of formula (I). (I) In this formula, R ₁ is selected from the group consisting of a carboxyl group, a carboxylate group, a carboxamide group and hydrogen, and R ₂ is selected from the group consisting of -CH ₂ COOCH ₃ , a methoxy group, a hydrogen and a methyl group. Also disclosed are methods for monitoring xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity levels.
