The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method to automatically detect an accident in a power system using a phasor measurement unit (PMU) signal, applying a wavelet analysis method to a PMU signal to automatically detect the part where an accident occurs. According to the present invention, the apparatus comprises: a time window setting unit to set first and second previous sections of a PMU input signal with respect to the current time; a wavelet coefficient energy (NWE) calculation unit to perform discrete wavelet transform for a signal of the set first and second sections and to calculate NWE; a normalized NWE calculation unit to calculate the ratio between the NWE of the first and second sections, and to calculate a normalized NWE at the current time; a threshold comparison and determination unit comparing the normalized NWE with a set threshold to determine whether an accident occurs in a PMU; and an event determination unit to determine the accident of the PMUs installed in a wide range in accordance with a determination result of the threshold comparison and determination unit.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2017
