An aspect of the present principles relates to a method and apparatus for tone-mapping high dynamic range images. The apparatus includes a processor for performing the following steps of the method: obtaining a luminance component of a high dynamic range image; determining an HDR to HDR tone mapper curve; and determining a tone compression image by applying the HDR to HDR tone mapper curve to the luminance component of the high dynamic range image, wherein the HDR to HDR tone mapper curve includes a first portion for a dark tone level and a middle tone level and a second portion for highlight. Accordingly, the present invention can solve the reduction problem of a dynamic range of HDR contents.
