The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating dementia or for improving dementia, which comprises 80% methanol extract of Clematis mandshurica as an active ingredient. The composition of the present invention activates acetylcholinesterase inhibition, -derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and cAMP-response-element-binding protein (CREB), thereby preventing dementia or treating dementia or improving cognitive function.
