Provided are a differential spatial modulation method and an MIMO system applying the same. According to the differential spatial modulation method, an antenna activation order by a permutation can be determined by applying a gray code order, thereby improving the bit error rate (BER) performance of differential spatial modulation (DSM) compared to the BER performance applying a lexicographic order and a lexi-gray order. The DSM method comprises the following steps: a transmitter divides an information bit of a transmission signal into a plurality of transmission blocks; the transmitter maps a permutation representing an antenna activation order to a specific bit of each of the transmission blocks; and the transmitter transmits the transmission block according to the antenna activation order mapped to the permutation.
