The present invention relates to means and methods for maintaining and preserving enzyme activity. In particular, the present invention relates to reagents, indicators, and ectoin or derivatives thereof capable of eliciting one or more optical changes in the optical properties of the indicator in the presence of a dehydrogenase, a redox cofactor, a redox counterpart, (Dry) composition containing a solute. The present invention further relates to a diagnostic test element for analyte crystallization from a fluid sample and to a method of making such a test element. Further, the present invention relates to the use of one or more of the above-mentioned compatible solutes for reducing the degradation of enzyme activity of one or more enzymes in a composition under drying conditions. In addition, the presence or the amount of the analyte in the body fluid sample based on the test element according to the invention is considered.
