The present invention relates to a method for determining the amount of a refrigerant in a heat pump system. The method can be used to determine whether the refrigerant is low by comparing a difference between the air suction temperature of an evaporator and the temperature of refrigerant pipes in the evaporator with a set temperature. The method also can also be used to determine the current amount of the filled refrigerant in a system from data stored in a database in advance regarding a change in the difference between the air suction temperature of an evaporator and the temperature of refrigerant pipes in the evaporator by manually reducing an opening degree of an expansion valve, thereby enabling a user or a manager to check whether an appropriate amount of the refrigerant is accurately filled in the system. The method also enables the current refrigerant amount in the system to be checked and predicts a refrigerant leakage more quickly to modify a control operation or increase the amount of the refrigerant filled therein, thereby preventing degradation of the system performance in advance.
