Method, apparatus, and system for implementing Quality of Service (QoS) within a high performance fabric. A multi-level QoS scheme is implemented that includes a virtual fabric, a traffic class, a service level (SL), a service channel (SC), and a virtual lane (VL). The SL is implemented for layer 4 (transport layer) end-to-end transmission of fabric packets, while the SC is used to distinguish fabric packets at the link layer. The fabric packet is divided into flits, and the fabric packet data is transmitted as a flit stream over the fabric link. The fabric switch input port and the device receive port implement SC-to-VL mapping to determine the SC ID for the received fabric packet and to determine the VL buffer for buffering the fabric packet flit internally. The SL may comprise multiple SCs and the SC to SC mapping may be configured to change the SC for the fabric packet while maintaining the SL of the SC when the fabric packet is forwarded through the fabric. The traffic class may include multiple SLs, enabling request and response traffic for an application to distinguish SL.
