METHODS FOR ERROR CONCEALMENT DUE TO ENHANCEMENT LAYER PACKET LOSS IN SCALABLE VIDEO CODING SVC DECODING

A method for concealing decoding errors of scalable video coding (SVC) is described. The lost picture in the target layer is replaced with an up-sampled picture from a lower layer such as the base layer. For a multi-loop decoding application, the lost picture at the target layer is replaced with a corresponding up-sampled picture from the lower layer. Subsequent target layer pictures in the same picture group (GOP) are replaced with a corresponding up-sampled picture from a lower layer, or this group is decoded into a picture up-sampled from a lower layer used as a reference picture. For single-loop decoding, the bitstream of each layer is buffered for each GOP, and errors are checked. If an error is detected in the target layer, the error-free highest hierarchical picture is decoded and upsampled and used as the output picture for the current GOP.
