According to an embodiment of the present invention, a battery charging apparatus having a maximum power point tracking control function using light energy harvesting comprises: a main photovoltaic (PV) cell to convert light energy into electric energy; an auxiliary PV cell to estimate a maximum power point (MPP) of the main PV cell; a charging circuit to receive an output of the main PV cell to form a battery charging voltage; a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control circuit to track a maximum power point (MPP) voltage of the main PV cell based on an output voltage of the auxiliary PV cell in real time, and control an operation of the charging circuit based on an output voltage of the main PV cell and the maximum power point voltage which is tracked in real time; and a battery management circuit to manage a charging state of the battery. The auxiliary PV cell is used to track the maximum power point of the main PV cell without having to periodically block a connection between the main PV cell and a charger circuit to continuously harvest energy and control maximum power point tracking in real time to improve power efficiency.
