A filter which is particularly suitable for filtration of molten metal, and method of making the filter, is described. The filter comprises a ceramic core comprising a primary component selected from the group consisting of alumina and magnesium oxide. A coating is on the ceramic core wherein the coating is selected from the group consisting of BN and Y2O3.
