FIELD: metallurgy.;SUBSTANCE: method of determination of density and surface tension in metal melts using a melt drop sample with known weight on a substrate fixated at one end of adjustable horizontal rod in electric furnace, involving adjustment and substrate and the rod position using substrate positioning unit, loading of a sample on the substrate, activation of measurement aggregate, heating and melting of the sample, photographic observation and image determination with a computer and photo receiver located outside of the electric furnace where the image includes contour of sample melt drop on the substrate, used to determine volume, density and surface tension of the drop. With melt slag components spilling at the substrate edge and/or masking the edge, and heat-resistant template of a given shape and size of horizontal and vertical parts corresponding to the substrate shape and dimensions is used; before sample heating and melting, the template is placed on the substrate loaded with a sample, template position is adjusted so that visible vertical parts of the template in the photo image matched vertical coordinates of the top substrate edge and top horizontal parts of template are parallel to the top horizontal edge of the substrate; vertical parts of heat-resistant template visible in a photo image are used as substrate edge coordinates; afterwards, further operations of the method are performed. Device features a template positioned at the said substrate mainly in focal plane, in the form of wire frame out of refractory metal.;EFFECT: reduced subjectivity in experiment performance and results, possible elimination of experiment interruptions, and obtainment of photo image parameter set required and sufficient for further determination of density and surface tension of tested metal melt upon drop or slag displacement to substrate edge.;10 cl, 5 dwg
