Brake system in an electric drive dump truck with a motor (10) driven by the motor (10) generator (11), traction motors (13L, 13R), which are driven by the generator (11) electrical power, a detection device (22 ) for detecting an amount of depression of a brake pedal (18) and service brakes (20L, 20R, 21L, 21R) which generate braking force in response to depression of the brake pedal (18) upon depression of the brake pedal (18); characterized by control means (14) which controls the traction motors (13L, 13R) such that the traction motors (13L, 13R) operate as generator type retarders and generate braking force in addition to the service brakes (20L, 20R, 21L, 21R) the amount of depression of the brake pedal (18) detected by the detecting means (22) is not smaller than a predetermined value greater than zero.
