It is a process for the treatment of a surface of aluminum or an aluminum alloy, in which a surface made of aluminum or an aluminum alloy may be anodically oxidized, in which the surface of a mixture of colloidal sio2 and an organic silane compound having the general formula i in which r1 for c1-C.6-Alkyl, c.sub.21-C.6-Alkoxy, - o - co - c1-C.5-Alkyl, which can optionally be substituted,R2 for a c1-C.6-Alkyl - group, which, if appropriate, with a c1-C.6-Alkoxy - group of a c6-C.10-Aryl -, or a c7-C.10-Aralkyl - group, an amino group or halogen can be substituted,n 0, 1 or 2, and m for a number from 1 to 3, with the proviso that m + n = 3,R3 for a polymerizable radical, is applied,which is characterized in that the silane compound having the formula i with an alkyl alcohol, and the resultant mixture is mixed with the colloidal sio2 , is brought into contact with the. It has been found that if, instead of the sol gel process according to - - silica gel, that is to say sio2 in colloidal form, in the presence of organically modified silane compounds is inserted, a very stable corrosion protection is obtained.
