To produce a seam beginning upper thread with a desired seam protrusion of at most 10 mm, first an upper thread section with a sewing needle is transported by a sewing material (15) from a workpiece upper side to a lower side of the workpiece. Subsequently, an upper thread starting section (13a) is pulled out with a gripper (19) until the entire upper thread starting section (13a) lies under the bottom of the sewing material. The upper thread starting section (13a) is grasped and guided with a top thread catcher (40). Subsequently, processing of the upper thread starting portion (13a) generates so that the seam projection results.
