A free-jet metering system is used to administer a fluid into an eye. The free jet metering system includes a micropump having an inlet and an outlet, wherein the micropump is configured to deliver the fluid from the inlet to the outlet and to deliver the fluid at the outlet as a free jet to the eye. Further, the free-jet metering system includes a sensor configured to detect the eye and control and a micro-pump, the controller being configured to activate the micropump as the eye is detected by the sensor.
